Four Styles of Dental Floss

Posted .

Did you know there is more than one style of dental floss to choose from? Dental floss comes in many different forms making it easy for you to find the best option for you. Yet, how do you know which style can help you most? Luckily, our dental team is happy to answer that question.

Our dentist, Dr. Gayle Fletcher with Patient-First Dental Care in Conroe, Texas, cares about your smile and oral health. Flossing at least once a day is important for your smile to stay in top-notch shape as you strive to achieve positive oral health. That is why our dental team is happy to explain to you the four-main style of dental floss, so you can have a basic understanding of their differences to see what will work best for you.

Waxed floss:
Threaded waxed floss is another style of dental floss that has a slippery, waxy substance on the floss string. The wax makes it simple for the floss to slide between teeth that are tight together or crooked, so you don’t have to pull it very hard to clean between your teeth and along the gumline. Waxed floss is ideal for anyone who finds it hard to place dental floss between their teeth.

Unwaxed dental floss:
Traditional threaded dental floss is frequently known as unwaxed dental floss. This style of floss can be difficult to wedge between crooked teeth or teeth that are very close together. As a result, unwaxed floss is perfect for those who have had orthodontic care or have a healthy alignment making it easier for the floss to slide between the teeth.

Water flossers:
Water flossers have become more prevalent now than ever before. Water flossers work by using water pressure to clean between your teeth and along your gums with a solid beam of water. Water flossers are gentle on the teeth and gums and have been confirmed to be effective. Because there is no string, this selection has become a popular choice for many due to the convenience.

Floss picks, also known as professional flossers:
Floss picks, or professional flossers, have various names. This style of floss is shaped like a “C” with a string of floss between the sides and a sharp pick on the handle. This type of floss is terrific for people who don’t like the traditional floss around their fingers. However, because the string is very short, you do use more floss picks than conventional floss, and some angles are harder to reach properly.

As you can see, there are various options when it comes to choosing a dental floss. By flossing each day, you can help defend your teeth from gum disease and other oral health difficulties that may arise.
